bank robber

Police arrest Bradly William Monical minutes after he allegedly robbed Sterling Savings Bank in downtown Coos Bay. Officers Ken Labrousse, right, and Mark Wheeling recovered a handgun and an undisclosed amount of cash.

A bank employee – who serves as a reserve police officer in Coos County – followed Monical out of the bank, maintaining a safe distance, then pointed him out to the responding officers, according to Sgt. Robert Lounsbury of the Coos Bay Police Department.

Officers caught up to Monical – who witnesses say was walking calmly down the north sidewalk of Anderson Avenue – at the intersection of Second Street and Anderson, three blocks from the bank. Two patrol officers cornered him on Second Street with their vehicles, and arrested him at gun point.

Monical did not resist arrest. After a brief search, police seized a bag with a loaded 9 mm handgun and an undisclosed amount of loose cash, some of which flew onto the street.

Police then attempted to take Monical’s picture, but he resisted the action, tucking his head down and pulling away.

Monical, a transient from Hood River, initially gave police a false name, but was positively identified using fingerprints.

He is housed at the Coos County jail on a $610,000 bail.
